DIRECTOR BRITISH COUNCIL SOUTH AFRICA

Colm McGivern is the Director of the British Council in South Africa. He leads the teams in Johannesburg and Cape Town creating educational and cultural connections between the UK and SA. Since he joined the SA team in 2014, the British Council has substantially increased its work in areas such as digital education, teacher training, entrepreneurship development and the creative industries.

His background is in Higher and Further education and training having started his career with Queen’s University Belfast, then moving in to community education and peace building work in Northern Ireland and internationally. With the British Council he was previously Regional Director UK, ensuring that the British Council’s work had greater impact in the UK. He led on Government relations, oversaw the British Council’s multi-million pound programme for London 2012, and developed the programme for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014.
